What to do about the scumrag?

Anyone visiting Scarborough cemetery to lay a wreath could walk past the final burying place of Jimmy Saville. In the perverted logic of the Daily Mail, this could be interpreted as paying tribute to the late sex abuser. The scumrag Mail is nevertheless continuing to peddle its story – thoroughly debunked by Skwawkbox – that Jeremy Corbyn, some years ago on a visit to Tunisia, paid tribute to the Munich terrorists who happen to be buried in the same graveyard as some Palestinians, themselves victims of a bombing. To make their story even sicker, the Mail’s frontpage today ‘reveals’ how relatives of the victims of the Munich massacre are upset - as they might well be if the scumrag’s story were true.

The question is, what to do about this scandalous fiction? Corbyn’s camp could shout ‘fake news!’ from the rooftops, but he could end up sounding like a mini-Trump. Certainly, his office should put out a strong denial – one shouldn’t let the crap go unchallenged, lest that be seen as an admission of some sort. The scumrag though would love a denial, to keep the story going, so there’s a risk inherent in that. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown of course tried to suck up to the scumrag’s editor Paul Dacre, but at what cost? And with hindsight, what benefit?

Then there is the question, does it really matter? The scumrag’s readership must now be 100% inured in Corbyn’s commie lovin’ Jew hatin’ anti-all British values persona that even if it were discovered that he was Hitler’s first-born it wouldn’t add to their concept of him as the worst thing to happen to Britain since the loss of empire.

​Might one then safely ignore this vile excuse for a newspaper? Perhaps not. Perhaps it would be better to turn its ridicule into something positive, knowing that the more it scrapes the barrel, the more it makes itself a laughing stock. Its mock outrage should be turned on itself, its ambition to present itself as a serious player needs to be upended. Perhaps there’s a role here for Tom Watson, whose record in tackling the vices of the British press provides him with the perfect spring board to leap into action in defence of his boss. In fact, I imagine that if he remained silent on these attacks, some would question Tom’s loyalty. And usefulness.
