Scarborough harbour these days often looks empty and deserted so it was a welcome sight this morning to see three vessels adding a little variety to the scene, albeit that one was moored off the east pier. All three are no strangers to Scarborough, but being present at the same time is rare. First off is the Trinity House Vessel Patricia, which sails round the British Isles fuelling lighthouses, restoring buoys and the like. It also takes a small number of paying passengers. I quite fancy that myself. Then, easily small enough to enter the harbour we have HMS Archer, one of the navy’s 14 fast patrol and training boats, this one associated with Edinburgh university. Given that the Royal Navy now has more admirals then fighting ships, these little patrol craft could be just the job to give them a bit of sea going experience now and then. Then there is the Smit Spey, which is contracted to the MOD to assist in training air/sea rescue crews, towing targets for RAF purposes, etc. If ever we need ‘em, will we have enough small boats to mount a defence of these precious isles? At least Scarborough still has the Regal Lady, but Dunkirk veteran the Coronia – owned by the local MP – has disappeared.
It is hard to contain one’s joy over the arrival of another royal sprog. I think as the royals move ever closer to representing Britain as it is today, there can be only one name for the lad: Jeremy.
Speaking of whom, I nearly fainted this morning when the BBC news, reporting on Corbyn’s forthcoming meeting with Jewish representatives, actually gave airtime to Jewish Voice for Labour. This is the Jewish group which the ‘mainstream’ Jewish Leadership Council and the Board of Deputies refuse to have anything to do with. Still, one of the demands made by the ‘mainstream’ groups is that there should be an independent ombudsman to investigate claims of anti-semitism in the Labour Party. I agree, and if it is truly independent, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t provide the same service to the Conservative Party and others too. I wonder if the JLC and the Board of Deputies would go along with that?
