David Lammy, with the titular title ’Deputy Prime Minister.’ was the latest to tell the nation how he told No. 10 and its cat that Mandy was the wrong person to be appointed the UK’s ambassador to the United States. Gordon Brown waded in as well and now there must be so many senior Labour MPs queuing up to denounce the Prince of Darkness that the queue will be longer around Westminster Hall than that for the late Queen’s lying in state. Now Morgan McSvengali has resigned seeking to shoulder the burden for this dreadful appointment all by himself. But I don’t think that’s going to work. As somebody once said ‘the buck stops here’ (not that that applies to the current US president). But McSweeney’s departure might buy our lame duck PM a little more time, which I think will finally run out after the May elections. There’s little Starmer can do to stave off disaster. If he was less interested in process and more interested in serious policies he may have had a chance of turning things round, but I guess his whole professional background prevails against this. And one is left wondering if there is sufficient independent intellectual thought left in the Parliamentary Labour Party’s ranks to lay the foundations for a revival—after as many independently minded MP’s as possible were purged and replaced by yes-types.
So far as new thinking on the ‘left’ is concerned, more voters will be looking to the Greens. I wonder if they will bear the level of scrutiny coming their way.
