The Faustian Bargain

How is anybody expected to believe otherwise than that politicians are beholden to money? The MPs expenses ‘scandal’ of 2006/7 left a bitter taste in the mouth of the electorate, but there’s no sign of lessons being learnt. Farage’s acceptance of a ‘personal gift’ of £5 million shortly before being elected an MP is an egregious example of entitlement and if only his potential voters could see that he is giving them—with a laugh and fag—the proverbial V-sign. Then there’s the latest scandal enveloping the SNP following the guilty plea of its former chief executive pleading guilty to nicking £400,000 of party funds some of which was spent on a motorhome parked outside his and his then partner—Nicola Sturgeon’s—home, along with jewellery and a host of other nick-nacks like cars, etc. Nicola thought all this was paid for from now ex-hubby’s salary. Labour in Holyrood has rightly called for an inquiry into the former first minister’s actual knowledge of the matter. As has former SNP MP Joanna Cherry who sought answers when she was a member of SNP’s executive and was roundly rebuffed. What is it about politicians and a sense of entitlement? I think the underlying psychology has much to do with the fact of being Chosen. That feeling of being specially equipped to run the country, a demanding and underpaid business, whilst being unrewarded and under-appreciated.
