One step at a time

Tory appointed Lord Mann hath spoken. He’s the so-called ‘independent’ government advisor on anti-Semitism, about as independent as Bibi Netanyahu himself. Mann has called for all NHS staff to be banned from wearing ‘political’ badges or symbols, in other words pro-Palestinian badges or symbols. No doubt this ban would apply to NHS staff who have voluntarily gone to Gaza to help in the humanitarian relief effort. On their return they will not be allowed to wear anything which signifies their sacrifice. Mann’s recommendations, which the government has declared it will accept in full is another small step to the closing down of freedom of expression in the UK, particularly when it bears on the UK government’s support for Israel’s genocide.
 
Where next for this crackdown? I have just returned from Venice where the 61st Art Biennale ‘In Minor Keys’ is in full swing. Critics have been divided over the merits of the curation of the show, which contains much material exploring colonialism and the global diasporas of persecuted people. Naturally there is plenty of work featuring the Palestinian crisis. Israeli art was notable by its absence, with their pavilion closed and a suggested alternative venue not to be found. If Lord Mann could have his way this Biennale would be closed down tomorrow.
