In a softball interview with the architect of the derelict building known as ‘Keir Starmer,’ one Morgan McSweeney was questioned on the BBC’s ‘Political Thinking’ programme. The interviewer Nick Robinson was probably more interested in getting a promotional soundbite than much else. No probing went on here. No questions about the tricks McSweeney and his secretive outfit ‘Labour Together’ got up to in order to defenestrate Jeremy Corbyn, no challenging the familiar but false media narrative (pedalled again by McSweeney) that Labour was riddled with anti-Semitism. But once in government, the political Svengali discovered he was out of his depth with the inevitable result being that the edifice he had done so much to build came crashing down. For which –obviously—he said he was sorry. I think the one thing I learnt from this interview was that the smooth-talking Irishman could probably talk his way out of a speeding ticket. His contribution to British politics will not be remembered for much more than his ultimately failed backroom shenanigans. There will be many of those left in the Party again saying ‘good riddance.’ I confess I turned the radio off before the interview came to a close, so I don’t know if Robinson asked McSweeney what he is doing now. Perhaps it’s something we should be alert to. Maybe Tony Blair could find him a role in his techbro funded Institute.
