Might the US and Russia be allies?

As we know, Canada is not immune to separatist movements.  Quebec was often in the news, and some might have believed that when President De Gaulle visited the province in the 1960s that may have been called foreign interference.

But now the issue is whether Alberta should become independent. This question is something that might appeal to both Trump and Putin. For Trump Albertan independence would be a way to weaken Canada as a nation state, and I imagine some Albertans with their vast oil tar sands may feel more economically secure cosying up to Trump. For Putin, anything which helps destabilise Western countries must be a good thing. There’s no guarantee a majority of Albertans want to tread this course, and they may want to consider the UK’s experience of Brexit before making their minds up. The potential now is for huge, albeit surreptitious foreign interference from both the US and Russia in an upcoming referendum. Perhaps they’ll work together?
